Same-Sex Marriages Homosexuals are not treated equally in our world today. They do not receive the same rights as heterosexuals. Homosexual couples are not allowed to marry in many countries around the world. All countries view homosexuality and same-sex marriages differently. Marriage should be between two people who love each other unconditionally. Unfortunately, people do not think about the love component in this controversial social issue. They think about the morality of the relationship. Many do not believe that it is ‘right’ or ‘lawful’ for people of the same-sex to be together. People are afraid of change. There have always been homosexuals in our world, but it has recently become more known and accepted in society. Countries like the United States, Iran and Uganda each have different views concerning same-sex marriages due to their culture, religious views and traditions. Countries like Uganda and Iran simply cannot accept homosexuality because they do not want to br eak traditions of a man and a woman. Therefore, homosexuality is not legal in either of these two countries. There are laws created against homosexuals. Barbie is a doll that has been outwardly controversial and debated upon for years and most likely will be for many years to come. The idea of the Barbie doll is a toy for which young girls model themselves after and aspire to be like when they mature and grow up. However, unlike previous views, communication of respect is a complex concept and more than merely simple politeness and courtesies. COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE- THE DIFFERENCES Cross cultural communicative competence framework developed by Ruben, has identified seven behavioural dimensions of cross cultural competence. They are * Display of respect * Interaction posture * Orientation to knowledge, Empathy * Self-oriented behaviour * Interaction management * Tolerance for ambiguity. Several years later on, it has been increased to nine dimensions by sub-dividing self-oriented behaviour into three distinct dimensions – * Task oriented roles * Relational roles * Individualistic roles. Communication of respect is heavily impacted by cultural norms. For many Koreans, respect is communicated via formality whereas for many Americans, respect is communicated in initial interacti ons by treating others equally. Sometimes due to lack of cross culture language, respect may not be effectively communicated. CONSEQUENCES OF RESPECT AND DISRESPECT Respect is very important silent feature in our communication and there are serious effects related to respect or the lack of the same. Therefore the phenomenon merits scholarly attention. Success is often dependant on being able to communicate respect and avoiding communication of disrespect. Communicating respect leads to a â€Å"social healing effect† on psychological perceptions of previously strained relationships. This article seeks not only to recognize the important work devoted to the communication of respect that has already been written, but also calls for more work to be done. THE CONCEPT OF COMMUNICATION OF RESPECT One of the key conceptual frameworks devoted to communication of respect is presented by Van Quaquebeke (2009) which distinguishes respect from tolerance and elaborates on two distinct types f respect. Tolerance is aligned with appraisal, whereas respect is closely aligned with recognition. Appraisal respect is evaluative and focuses on a result, while recognition respect is more process focused and occurs in interaction. The author of this article emphasizes on interactional respect. Anthoy lister Essay Fox Galleries (103 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley) has opened the doors on it newest exhibition, Anthony Lister: subtitled. The showcase displays Anthony Listers unique brand of street art. His works can be described as anywhere from abstract to pop, to graffiti. The style is very free-form and none confined. Many mediums were used to create his art but he seems favor putting it all on canvas. When Lister paints he tells a story about whatever kind of environment hes in at the moment. The layout of the exhibition itself is rather structured and organized. I think simple and neat was the aim here. I have chosen three painting to closely analyze: Portrait of Egon Schiele, Discard the Retard and Paddington from Pratts. When compared to his mentor, Max Gimblett the two distinctive styles would probably be as far as each other as possible. Max prefers his paintings to be on irregular canvases and his work can range from patterns to abstract, yet dont have the slight chaos of Listers. Predominant throughout the three mentioned works you can see the use of repetition, restriction of colour, emphasis and line. His particular style seems free, spontaneous and sees no real confinement. The general restriction of colour make anything not in bland almost scream off the canvas and creates a very effective focal point. Anthony has said himself Im not trying to change the world, Im just reacting to the world trying to change me. That would perfectly describe Listers motivation to paint and create. Whether its a social statement or purely something for himself he has created something that people can enjoy. Again Lister stated he normally chooses his subject matter by simply finding something within his immediate environment. Any deeper meanings one might find would probably be purely speculation, but the interesting composition in Discard the Retard where the constant stencil of a duck pattern has been used and a single stand-out of the crowd duck can be seen (solid black rather than just black outlining). The meaning I drew from this is; I think Anthony doesnt like to be part of the crowd. Maybe he sees himself as the black duck and has been social out-casted before for being a individual, but now being an individual as an artist has brought him joy. So he may be saying being different isnt a bad t hing.
